System Helps Prevent Retained Surgical Sponges
ClearCount Medical Solutions, an innovator of patient safety solutions for the operating room, has received 510(k) clearance from the FDA to begin commercialization of its SmartWand-DTX system.
According to the company, the system is the only radio frequency identification (RFID)-based detection system for the prevention of retained surgical sponges in hospitals and surgery centers. Additionally, the RFID platform’s unique identification of each sponge makes the SmartWand-DTX the only detection system capable of counting.
The detection system is easy to use, practical and economical, as it has a reusable wand. The compact and portable system allows hospitals to utilize the solution wherever needed.
“We are commercializing a detection system that offers broad advantages over current offerings, and this new product, in addition to our award-winning SmartSponge System, for the first time provides hospitals a choice of devices to best address the unique conditions of each OR,” said David Palmer, chief executive officer at ClearCount.
