ClearCount Medical Solutions is a medical device company focused on patient safety solutions.  ClearCount has assembled an extendable RFID-based platform that provides a comprehensive solution to improve efficiency while preventing medical errors. ClearCount’s SmartSponge and SmartWand-DTX systems are the only RFID-enabled systems for counting and detecting surgical sponges, thereby improving patient and OR safety, enhancing productivity, and reducing cost.  Popular Science recognized ClearCount’s technology as one of the top 100 innovations of 2009 among several other awards.  ClearCount was founded in 2004.

Products Overview

The ClearCount Platform enables a product architecture focused on improving patient safety, reducing the impact of human error, and enhancing hospital reputation. The SmartSponge System provides the most complete solution available, with both count reconciliation and detection. Also available on the ClearCount Platform is the lower-cost, count-verification and detection solution, the SmartWand-DTX.

  • The SmartSponge System is the only closed-loop sponge count reconciliation and detection solution providing the height of control, including electronic record creation and a dedicated SmartBucket. The SmartSponge System is the first and only system to build the highest level of accuracy into both the counting and detection of surgical sponges. Its RFID-based technology provides individual ID of each sponge, reconciling sponge counts, reducing the chance of human error, mitigating the hectic quality of the O.R. and providing multiple checkpoints, with an average of 80,000 counts per procedure.

  • The SmartWand-DTX is Detection That Counts, the only RFID-detection solution, capable of positively identifying and locating retained and missing sponges and verifying counts, while leveraging an extendible technology platform. Better than other detection systems that can’t discern when more than one detection is taking place and /or which type of sponge is being detected, SmartWand-DTX detects sponges that are uniquely identified by their embedded chip. Providing positive ID and location, SmartWand-DTX validates read range, avoids false positives and offers a feature-rich SmartWand.
